Precept 2018-2019:

26/2/2018

The amount of next year’s precept was decided at the Parish Council meeting on 15th January 2018 and notified to the Vale District Council by 22nd Jan 2018.  The sum was decided based on careful budgeting by the Responsible Finance Officer based on historical data and information provided by Councillors.
The amount will be £9070.  (Last year’s precept was set at £7225.)  In round terms this will increase the precept from £48 per band D household to around £60 per annum.  In absolute terms this is a modest increase and when the financial responsibilities and commitments of the Parish Council over the next year are taken into account represents exceptionally good value.  We are a parish that maintains its own parish room and village play park for the benefit of the community; remunerates its parish clerks, and maintains its hedges and verges.
Parishioners who would like to know more about the details of the parish finances are advised to consult the parish web-site where they will find all the relevant documents and Council meeting minutes.
Ian Mason, Responsible Finance Officer, Great Coxwell PC

Hedge and tree clearing in the village

26/2/2018

The Parish council and local landowners have done a lot of hedge and tree clearing in the last few weeks before the 1st March deadline after which hedges etc are not to be cut hard back so as to protect spring nesting birds. Most of the hedges have been cut at about 2 feet as this encourages re-growth from the bottom. It may look a bit rough but should become a thicker healthier hedge in the future. Some trees have been felled where they were overhanging the road. The War Memorial hedge had outgrown its location. It has been removed, the stumps will be ground out next week and a new hedge will be laid in due course. All the work has been approved by the highways inspector, the countryside officer and the district council.

New Ranger at Badbury
My name is Joe Mayled and I am the new part-time Ranger for Badbury Hill. I’ve worked for the National Trust as a Ranger for the last 8 years over in the Chiltern Hills so I’m really excited about getting to know a new part of the country. Badbury Hill is a fantastic site with lots of potential for both nature conservation and access and I can’t wait to get stuck in. I only work 3 days a week but when I’m in you should find me out on site so please do come and say hello. If you see anything that you think I should know about then please call the Estate Office on 01793 762209 or drop me an email joe.mayled@nationaltrust.org.uk . I look forward to seeing you at Badbury soon.

St Giles

As many of you will know, it was decided some time ago to convert the as yet unused and wild part of the new churchyard into a remembrance garden, largely as a wildflower and wildlife area, but with the addition of some native shrubs and bulbs. It was intended for the enjoyment of everyone, not just the members of the church, but all in the village and anyone visiting. A steering committee was established to take this forward and thanks to the incredible generosity of Ian Burn, much has been accomplished towards realising this aim. Pathways have been established, shrubs and daffodils planted, and seats donated for visitors to the garden to sit and enjoy the wonderful views. But there is still much to be done.
Now that Ian has relocated to Cambridge, the PCC wants to ensure that the work that has been done is not undone and that the garden continues to develop. Funding regular maintenance of the garden is not possible as we are always aware that our scarce resources are needed to maintain the fabric of the building. We therefore need to minimise the outlay on the garden by doing as much of the ongoing work ourselves.
The current steering committee consists of Lindsay O'Kelly (Ian's daughter), Peter Gale, Mike Heathcoat, the vicar and the churchwardens, who are hoping to establish a list of volunteers who would be willing occasionally to lend a hand in the garden. The idea is that when one of the members of the steering committee is going to be working in the garden an email can go out to this list of volunteers to ask whether any of them could spare an hour or two (no more) to join them. In this way we can maintain and develop the garden.
We would be grateful for any help you can give. If you are able and willing to be included on such a list, please let one of the steering committee have your email address (or phone number).
Many thanks, Pat

Village Book Exchange

Karen and Ian Mason have restocked the phone box book exchange with lots of new books - feel free to have a browse and take anything that grabs your interest.   If you have any books to spare and would like to donate them, please contact the Masons on 01367 241912 or ians.mason@btinternet.com and we’ll arrange to take them off your hands.   Children’s books seem to be especially popular and so if you’ve got any of these that you no longer need, we’d be keen to have them. Many thanks. Ian & Karen

Project to upgrade the path behind the riding stables

2/2/2018

The Parish Council are looking to upgrade the path behind the riding stables so it can be walked by anyone in normal shoes (not just wellies) to access Faringdon, schools or the busses. After taking advice from Oxfordshire's Highways and Footpaths our eventual aim is to provide a tarmac parth from the roundabout behind the stables and in to the village linking it up to the pavement by Cherry Orchard. We hope most of our funding will come from developer contributions from the Steeds and Fernham Fields for the actual hard surface. But first we needed to clear the vegetation both at ground level and also above. This is a multistage job.
Huge thank you to Judy Heathcoat for all her support and advice in helping securing us a grant  of £2000 which fully funds the first phase of the project - the clearing and coppicing.
Work will start very shortly.

We have £1222 in village community fund. This has mainly been raised from the cafe at artweeks. We aim to give some of it to restore the nativity and contribute to a defibrillator in the village.
If folk have a good community idea we would love to hear from them with a view to financially supporting it. Please contact the newsletter and I will past on to Pauline, Sylvia, Steve or Pam.
