DIY Waste and Survey

30/3/2023

A couple of news items from OCC:

I recall there was some thought of closing the centre at Stanford in the Vale so if you use it then the survey below could be of interest.

DIY waste charges to increaseThe cost of getting rid of non-household (DIY) waste at our recycling centres will be changing from Saturday 1 April.

Residents can find all the price information on our website.

Residents' views on how we manage our household waste sitesOur household waste recycling centre strategy sets out our vision for how we manage the infrastructure and services offered at the council's household waste sites.

We'd love residents to share their thoughts on our proposals using our survey.

Emergency Alerts system launched – test on 23 April

22/3/2023

On Monday (19 March), the Cabinet Office launched a new system that will give the government and emergency services the capability to send an alert directly to mobile phones when there is a risk to life.

The Emergency Alerts system will allow the government to get urgent messages quickly to nearly 90 percent of mobile phones in a defined area. The system is now ready to be tested across the country following successful tests in East Suffolk and Reading.

The alerts will only ever come from the government or emergency services, and they will issue a warning, the details of the area impacted, and instructions about how best to respond.

Emergency Alerts will be used very rarely – only being sent where there is an immediate risk to people’s lives – so people may not receive an alert for months, or even years.

Emergency Alerts will be used across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and their initial use will focus on the most serious severe weather-related incidents, including severe flooding in England.

By broadcasting from cell towers in the vicinity of an emergency, the alerts are secure, free to receive, and one-way. They do not reveal anyone’s location or collect personal data.

Some vulnerable groups may want to opt out of the emergency alerts system. However, the government strongly recommends that people do not opt out of the service, as it is intended to warn people when lives are in danger.

The government has produced a toolkit to help councils communicate key messages as part of the Emergency Alerts campaign.

A UK-wide alerts test will take place in the early evening of 23 April which will see people receive a test message on their mobile phones.

Memories of Great Coxwell

22/3/2023

I recently received a lovely email from Janet Longstreeth (was Morse) who lived in Great Coxwell between 1945 and 1969.

"The lady that ran the post office was  Mrs Sweetland and her daughter Phyllis was my friend. I also  remember Mr & Mrs Hunter who ran the Royal Oak; and the old lady who had the shop next to The Laurels was called Miss Roberts. The Laurels was my family home, we were the Morse family. The house is now I think called Warrene house. I also have a painting of the house done during the 2nd world war by Fred Jarchow and wondered if this was the same person mentioned in the letter who did paintings in a shed [as referred to here]. I also remember Mr Cox and his milk round with his pony."

If you have anything to add or would like to share any memories of Great Coxwell for the website please email [email protected].

Robert (Bob) Miles

21/3/2023

I am told that some of you will remember Bob Miles who used to farm pigs at the top of Puddleduck Lane.  Bob passed away on 7th March and is to be buried with his late wife in our churchyard on Maundy Thursday, 6th April at 12 noon.

His daughter, who grew up in the village, and her family would welcome anyone from the village who remembers Bob to join them at his funeral.
