Guttering

29/4/2021

I am interested if anyone has any spare pieces of plastic guttering, in black if possible, about 2 to 3m sections.

Also if anyone has any old water butts they don’t need.

It's a chiffchaff, chaps!

29/4/2021

We may be locked down, but there are no borders for birds and thank goodness! The warblers with their wonderful voices are arriving back in Great Coxwell, some from as far away as Southern Africa.

One easy one to hear is the Chiffchaff. They'll sit in the treetops, tweeting out the rhythm of life: "chiff chaff chiff chap chiff chaff" for hours on end. Listen here: ♫ Chiffchaff - song / call / voice / sound.

The best place for warblers in the village is the scrubby bit up beyond the big oak in the field beyond the Barn. You'll hear blackcaps and willow warblers and, on a sunny day, the chiffchaff is a safe bet.

My biology teacher would often cry "it's a chiffchaff, chaps", wherever we were and whatever we were doing, much to the mortification of the class. Now, of course, so do I.

GARDENING TIP
As this wonderful weather stays and we might look to growing flowers or vegetables here is an amazing fact about PEAT:

There is a lot of carbon locked up in peat. Peatlands are the largest and most concentrated global store of carbon. They contain twice the carbon of all the global forests even though they only cover 3% of the planet. They are energy balls of carbon. Peatlands can take thousands of years to form. Once they're dug up for us to use in our gardens, the carbon they've locked away for millennia is released and contributes to climate change.

So let's protect our peatlands and keep it in a bog by taking care not to buy peat based composts.

Anne O’Farrell

26/4/2021

It is with sadness that Kate Norman has informed me that her mother Anne O’Farrell died peacefully at home on Thursday last. Her family were with her.

Nicola, David, Kate and Sean would like to extend their sincere thanks for all the cards that Anne received while she was in hospital and afterwards. She read then all and without doubt they raised her spirits. We would also like to thank all the residents of Great Coxwell for their kindness and long friendships to our wonderful and brave mum.

Arrangements for her funeral will follow later.

Annual Parish meeting, Monday 26th April 2021 at 7:15pm

24/4/2021

Mr Richard Watson, Countryside Manager, West Oxfordshire for the National Trust, will attend the next Annual Parish meeting to discuss what can be done about dog waste around the Tithe Barn and to update the village on the Trust’s tree planting plans for Great Coxwell.

This will be an excellent opportunity to discuss issues with the National Trust. If you would like to attend this Zoom meeting, please write to Jo King, the Parish Clerk, at clerk@greatcoxwell.com for the link to the meeting.

Thank you.

Sunday May 2nd Cake Delivery

24/4/2021

We are sure you must all be missing that delicious slice of cake on a Sunday afternoon. So, we can deliver cake of your choice to you on Sunday 2nd May.

Your order from this month’s choice of four lovely cakes will be delivered to your doorstep mid-afternoon on Sunday. We thank you in advance for a donation of £5 (for each two slices) to the Great Coxwell Community Fund.

Let us know (by Friday April 30th if possible) which cakes you would like from the selection below. As many different cakes as desired can be ordered. We apologise for it being two slices of the same cake in each box, which is for safety reasons just now: this way no change is required, and only one person has handled what goes into individual orders.

Please place orders with the baker(s) of the cake(s) you want, giving the name of your house, your name and phone number, and enjoy.
