Citizens Advice boosts help for Universal Credit claimants

29/3/2019

Citizens Advice has designed a new service to help you and speed things up if you are claiming Universal Credit for the first time but having problems with the application. The "Help to Claim" service will be available in England from 1 April 2019 over the telephone, face to face, and online through “webchat” and Internet content.

We can advise on your eligibility, set up an email address or Universal Credit account, fill in the initial application form, get access to a computer, or arrange advance payments. We can also help you by ensuring that the right evidence is submitted with your form. And if you only need minimal help with your application, Citizens Advice can provide tips if you get stuck.

As part of its normal service, Citizens Advice also supports people who are already receiving Universal Credit. The national Freephone number for Help to Claim is 0800 144 8444. Telephone and webchat services are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Monday-Friday)

For any other issues you might need help with, please telephone the Citizens Advice Adviceline on 03 444 111 444. Come and see us in person if you prefer. For locations of offices and opening hours see www.citizensadvice.org.uk/local/oxfordshire-south-vale

Volunteers Needed to Listen to Children Read in Local Primary Schools

29/3/2019

Can you spare an hour or two a week to listen to children read in a local primary school?

Schoolreaders is looking for more volunteers in Oxfordshire to carry out this important role.

Reading time for many children at home and at school is often insufficient and according to Government statistics, one in four children are now leaving primary school unable to read to the expected standard.

This can have  lifelong consequences.

Schoolreaders is flexible and aims to match your availability to an appropriate, local school.  No qualifications are necessary, just a good command of spoken and written English and a commitment of one year is requested. Our volunteers find the scheme incredibly rewarding, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life chances.

Please visit the website www.schoolreaders.org  to join or call 01234 924111 for further information.

This will be held this year on Tuesday March 26th at 7.30pm at the Vicarage. It is our opportunity each Spring to reflect on the past year and to look forward to the year ahead, and in particular to receive the annual reports and accounts, and to hear about developments in the church locally and more widely. We will also be electing (or re-electing) the church officers for the coming year. Everyone is welcome; and a glass of wine and nibbles on offer at the end of the meeting. Please could you let us know if you are coming so we can plan the seating accordingly.

Driving Speeds in the Village

20/3/2019

Picture
Please keep your speed down in the village especially near the turnings to The Laurels and the bend near the bottom of the village. There have been a number of near misses and people are finding it dangerous pulling out from The Laurels in to Holloway as traffic passes at such a speed.

It is generally understood that 20 mph is the maximum recommended speed in a village setting. It is the responsibility of us all to drive with care and consideration for our fellow villagers.

Have you heard of Borrowbox?

I had not heard of this excellent service offered by Oxfordshire Libraries and many other Libraries around the country, until recently. You can sign up free to get Audiobooks delivered to your iPad or other similar appliance and can listen to a good selection of Audiobooks for free. Perfect for anyone who, like me, can’t, or can’t be bothered, to read.

There are also ebooks available to download .

Just sign up via your existing library account, you don’t need anything special except your account number and your password … or create an account if you don’t have one already.
